Learning to Read: Ice Cream Soup

I found a young reader book with a fascinating subject matter.  The boys happily worked hard to read the story so they could make the same ice cream creation. They sounded out new words and helped each other decode the recipe.  I had them wait until after dinner to actually eat their concoction, which didn’t hold up very well.  “Mom, Ice Cream Soup was fun to make, but it tasted kind of weird. The cookies were soggy.”  But, hey, they got to log another book on their reading sheet and the gummy bears were said to be delicious.
