“Candle Game” is a fun one to practice Executive Function skills. Impulse control is just one of those amazing skills that come in handy in life and takes practice (lots of practice). The game is very simple: I light a candle and place it on the table in front of Luke. I tell him the rule is that he has to wait to blow out the fire until Mom says, “Go!”. I typically wait anywhere between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. This game was very hard for Luke at first. He couldn’t resist and would quickly blow out the candle saying, “Oh, no, let’s try again.” After many tries, he held on to the urge with all of his might, even turning his head to the side and blowing out a little air, telling me, “I’m not blowing the candle, it’s safe.” He got such a kick out of finally holding it in and blowing out the candle when it was Go time. He asked to repeat this game over and over.
